What are the Different Types of Nose Surgeries?

Whenever you think of nose surgery, you might imagine a self-conscious boy or girl in their twenties or thirties who wishes for a flawless and perfect nose.

Nose surgery is an invasive procedure designed to alter the shape and size of the nose. The procedure is performed to improve the nose’s appearance, correct a congenital disability, or correct breathing problems caused by structural defects in the nose.

However, the motives for obtaining nose surgery typically extend beyond a goal for improved looks, and the age ranges from 12 to 70.

Some people have congenital deformities from birth, whereas others are injured and have their facial characteristics deformed. No matter the reason for nose surgery, no two nose surgeries are similar, thus a necessity to distinguish between them.

Let’s explore the different types of nose surgeries.

1. Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as “nose job”, is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the nose to improve its appearance and function. The procedure is performed to address a wide range of issues, including changes in the size of the nose, changes in the angle of the nose, narrowing of the nostril, and straightening the bridge. During the procedure, the surgeon makes incisions inside the nostrils and reshapes the underlying bones and cartilage to achieve the desired outcome. There are four types of rhinoplasty:

  • Reduction rhinoplasty: As the name suggests, reduction rhinoplasty is performed to reduce the size of the nose. The patients can go for an overall size reduction or select a particular area like a hump, tip or bump. The procedure is done by removing the cartilage or bone from the nose.
  • Augmentation rhinoplasty: Augmentation rhinoplasty is used to increase the proportions of the nose. The procedure is used to correct various aesthetic and functional issues of the nose, such as a nose that is too small or a nose that has been damaged due to injury. The procedure is performed using the patient’s own cartilage or synthetic implant.
  • Corrective rhinoplasty: Corrective rhinoplasty, also known as reconstructive or revision rhinoplasty, is performed on individuals who have previously undergone a rhinoplasty procedure and are dissatisfied with the results or those who have experienced functional problems with their nose following previous surgery. This procedure may include augmentation or reduction rhinoplasty. The procedure is very complicated, as the patient may need to undergo many nose surgeries.
  • Post-traumatic rhinoplasty: Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is performed to repair or correct the damage to the nose caused by injury or trauma. During a post-traumatic rhinoplasty, the surgeon will repair any fracture or damage to the bone and cartilage of the nose or correct a deviated septum.

2. Septoplasty

Septoplasty is used to correct a deviated septum, a condition in which the bone and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity are not straight. Some people are born with a deviated nose, but it may also be induced by nasal injury, which may cause breathing difficulties. Septoplasty corrects the septum and improves airflow through the nose.

During the procedure, a small incision is made on one side of the nose, and the mucous membrane is lifted. The extra bone or cartilage is removed, which causes deviation. The mucous membrane is then repositioned to create a straight septum.

3. Rhinoseptoplasty

Rhinoseptoplasty is performed to correct nose deformities. Rhinoseptoplasty is a complicated surgery involving the combination of rhinoplasty procedure, which is the surgery to improve the appearance of the nose and septoplasty, which is the surgery to correct the deviated septum.

Rhinoseptoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will reshape the nose, remove any bumps or irregularities and straighten the septum. The best candidate for rhinoseptoplasty is someone with congenital deformities, a saddle nose, or nasal septum deviation.

4. Turbinate Reduction

Turbinate reduction is one of the nose surgeries that involves reducing the size of the turbinates, bony structures inside the nose that help to humidify, filter, and warm the air we breathe. The procedure is generally performed to improve nasal breathing in individuals with nasal congestion or obstructive sleep apnea. Most people have problems with turbinates from time to time due to allergies, illnesses, or weather changes, and a turbinate reduction can assist them in opening up their airways.

Several techniques can be used to reduce the size of the turbinates, including radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation, and resection. The method will depend on the individual’s specific needs and the surgeon’s preferences.

5. Alarplasty Surgery

Alarplasty, also known as alar base reduction surgery, is a procedure used to alter the shape and size of the nostrils. It is often performed to improve the nose’s appearance or to correct a structural issue causing difficulty with breathing. Alarplasty is a nasal wing operation in which a small quantity of skin is removed.

Make a correct and informed decision!

Nose surgeries are very personal procedures, and different types of nose surgeries can be performed depending on the patient’s requirements. Rhinoplasty, septoplasty, rhinoseptoplasty, and turbinate reduction are a few procedures that can be done to improve the appearance and functionality of the nose.

It is a complex procedure that requires a skilled surgeon and a thorough understanding of the patient’s medical history and desired outcome.
